Kalymnos, September 2008
Week 1 : 14th - 19th
Week 2 : 21st - 26th
The common concensus seems to be that Kalymnos is a hard place to get to. Not so, especially with our comprehensive travel information section below. Travelling is part of the holiday and is a time to spend gearing up for the week ahead or relaxing on the way back home again. In reality Kalymnos is usually a short-haul flight from most European cities and now that the island's airport is finally open you can either fly straight in (via Athens connection) or into Kos with a 20 or 45 min walk-on ferry ride at the end that just adds to the excitement as your destination slowly comes into view across the water.
How to get there-
General
The easiest option is to fly to Athens then get a connecting flight to Kalymnos, otherwise the closest airport to Kalymnos is on Kos which is well serviced by scheduled and charter flights from all over Europe. Most charter flights from the UK arrive overnight on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
If you fly to Kos you will need to go to Mastihari port by taxi (10-15EUR) or by Olympic Airways bus which normally coincides with Olympic flights.
From Mastihari, two walk-on ferries depart regularly throughout the day to Kalymnos. The smaller Flying Dolphin passenger only ferry takes approx 20 mins and the slightly larger ANEK ferry takes approximately 45 minutes.
Olympic Airways has one scheduled flight to Kalymnos (but not daily) and to Kos 3 times a day (both with a change at Athens) and Aegean Airlines run flights from Athens to all the major islands including Kos. There are ferry and hyrofoil services which leave Piraeus (Athens) harbour for Kalymnos regularly throughout the day. It is also possible to get to Kalymnos via ferry or hyrofoil from Rhodes or Bodrum (Turkey).
You can also visit Rhodes, Kos and other smaller islands around Kalymnos very easily by using 'Flying Dolphins' or catamaran during the day.
More details of flight schedules and charter companies will be posted here soon, in the meantime, a good place to start your search is at Google.
Searching www.google.co.uk returns around 500,000 results including sponsored links from the usual charter flight specialists, there are usually some very good deals to be had if you book early with prices rising steadily throughout the summer and often falling slightly again in the last few weeks before departure.More soon...
